SRSmentor's SRS / GRS Cost Calculator allows you to quickly price out the cost and related expenses of your upcoming surgeries. The calculator provides you with three columns: SRSmentor, Provider 2, and Provider 3. The defaults costs shown are a starting point. Based on 2011 fees and travel expenses, the costs can be edited and modified to suit you own needs.

There are major differences to keep in mind when price shopping. The USA medical system is based on rigorous itemization as well as substantially higher costs than experienced by the rest of the world. In non-USA hospitals, medications and supplies cost marginally more in a hospital environment, or are simply included in the overall service.

This pricing model causes USA transgender patients to suffer. Yes, USA surgeons do offer package pricing to their patient clientele, but at a great personal and financial cost to you. Often USA based surgeons provide one or two days recovery in hospital. Most of your recovery is spent in an inadequate setting such as a motel room. SRSmentor staff has observed some FFS surgeons releasing patients after one post-op day in the hospital. We feel these protocols are in direct conflict with acceptable medical care. What about infection? What about pain? After receiving extensive surgery, literally down to the bone, is it acceptable practice to send a patient to a motel room with a bottle of Tylenol 3 pain relievers— without nursing care or oversight?

We do not consider a brief one or two day hospital stay to be sufficient. Our cost calculator is based on the standard care of 6 days and 5 nights in hospital. To compare other surgeons, you will need to find out daily hospital costs/nurses fees, etc., at the USA based hospitals you are considering. The US Census Bureau publishes hospital costs per state. The latest statistical abstract (2008 costs) lists the average hospital cost as $1,782. per patient/per day. The most optimistic studies indicate US hospital care costs have risen 9-1/4% since that time. You can access this data here

A private or semi-private room is where a patient is sent after being recovered in the PACU (recovery room) for continued care until discharged from the hospital. The current cost range for daily hospital room and board is $700 to 1,600. Most US states do not disclose much in the way of cost data to the general public. Ohio, however, is the exception. With costs slightly higher that the national average, the wealth of Ohio data will allow you to judge costs in other states.

About 30 states have some sort of regulation geared to provide disclosure on hospital practices. Ohio is particularly good on showing the underside of the hospital cost structure. All Ohio hospitals are required to disclose the most significant charges that affect a surgical patient: daily room and board charge, operating room fees, cost of x-ray, etc. This data combined with federal hospital data allows a surprising degree in accuracy of the major hospital costs in all 50 states that you will experience from your SRS and recovery.

Travel expense from the West Coast to Thailand (coach) is about $900 round trip. Please see our travel section for current recommendations on airlines. Accommodation is planned after your surgeon has approved your surgery treatment plan.

Please realize that the cost of gender reassignment surgery is borne by the individual. Insurance normally will not cover your expense. However, surgeons will provide procedure lists and documentation afterwards, upon request, for you to make any claim for medical coverage or tax benefits that may be available to you.

Most cosmetic surgery loan companies choose the surgeon for you and not only make interest from your loan. They charge the plastic surgeon a fee as well. We do not recommend cosmetic surgery finance companies. Finance companies should be in the business of financing plastic surgery, not recommending surgeons. Finance companies will likely be of no help whether you are planning surgery in the US or abroad.
